Sabu Orimo
Wind Songs
SIWA SLP-901
LP
OUT OF STOCK!

Limited LP on Alan Sherry’s SIWA imprint from stoned-age Japanese shakuhachi improviser Sabu Orimo. Orimo’s parents made up the radical noise/environmental actionists Iro, previously documented by PSF, and he has inherited their commitment to pushing instrumental logic to its furthest extremes. Wind Songs is a series of improvisations for shakuhachi and voice recorded between 2007 and 2008. Orimo plays with an uncommon force, at moments almost sounding like Peter Brotzmann circa No Nothing, forcing growling overtones and arcs of acoustic feedback from zoned, Eastern-inflected lines and moments of thick, heady silence. Wind Songs has all of the psychedelic, cultic power of Don Cherry’s Organic Music Society, with a drop-out feel and the sound of breathy, reflective lines floating deep in space. It’s hard to think of anyone exploring a remotely similar stripped down take on psychedelic improvisation outside of the UK’s Part Wild Horses Mane On Both Sides and if Pascal and Kelly’s higher-minded duo exchanges have taken you *there* this year, this ought to make for a whole other trip. Packaged with the usual care by Sherry, in a numbered edition of only 299 copies with five colour silkscreened sleeves. Highly recommended.
