Vodka Soap
Interpretation "The Initiation"
Pacific City No Cat
CD-R
OUT OF STOCK!

Brand new limited self-released CD-R from Spencer Clark of The Skater’s Vodka Soap project. Been a while since we heard from this particular persona and the sound here feels like a massive step elsewhere. There’s a more spacious aspect, a sense of passing through various distant environments, combined with a more ‘sophisticated’ use of reality-scrambling tape edits. It starts off with a gorgeous, melancholy piano figure before schlepping back into a widescreen recording of far away ritual, with gentle electronics and otherworldly atmospherics creating a sense of huge, continental scale visions. The CD is intended as an interpretation of Chilean artist Roberto Matta’s painting The Initiation. Matta used biomorphic techniques to blend life form visions that would bridge this and other worlds. Here Spencer adopts a similar technique, using a subtle sonic sleight of hand in order to suggest phantom scale and a progression of landscapes that also work as recreations of altered mind-states. This is a supremely psychedelic side, working almost like a magic eye painting, a computer game or a tarot card as a proxy for the experience of different realities. It’s also one of his most straightforwardly beautiful creations, luxuriously lost early psychedelia that links ancient and future power sources. Highly recommended.
