Arrington De Dionyso
Breath Of Fire

K KLP-176

CD
£10.99

Who would have thought that one of the premier free-blowing discs of the new millennium would've arrived courtesy of Calvin Johnson's K Records? But Breath Of Fire is a real monster, with proto-Brotzmann/Baczkowski levels of circular bass clarinet evisceration that match anything on No Nothing combined with long sections of wild, illuminated throat singing, the sound of newspapers crunched in fists, a singing copper kettle and some psychedelic jaw harp. The overall feel is of exploratory personal ritual, somewhere between The Sea Ensemble's multi-instrumental inventions, The Gyuoto Monks and Arthur Doyle. If you thrilled to De Dionyso's recent high-wire performance with Owl Sounds, here's another throatful of teeth.
