The Human Beast
Volume One
Akarma AK-335
LP
£16.99
Deluxe 180g LP reissue of this legendary Anglo/Scottish power-bending psych/metal side, originally released by Decca in 1970. The guitar is pure wasted nada, post-Hendrix form extended into beautifully blunt blues-bombers ala Groundhogs, Budgie, early-Sabs et al while the whole album has a revelatory sci-fi/inner space narrative feel to it, with lyrics that conflate cosmic liturgy, almost Satanic evolutionary regress and pure teenage revelation. That three boners like this cut an album of such all-encompassing magnitude speaks eloquently of the accelerated spiritual bent of the times and makes the current mainstream cultural whatsit seem all the more depressing. But it’s plug-ins like this that keep you believing. Highly recommended for fans of guitar-as-deliverance.

The Keith Tippett Group
'You Are Here... I Am There'
Akarma AK-338
LP
£14.99
Heavy-duty reissue of the first album (recorded 1970) by the Keith Tippett Group, originally released by Polydor UK. Classic free-thinking line-up includes Marc Charig on cornet, Elton Dean on alto sax, Nick Evans on trombone, Jeff Clyne on electric and acoustic bass, Alan Jackson on drums and glockenspiel, Giorgio Gomelsky on bells and Tippett on acoustic and electric piano. Sound bridges early UK prog/Canterbury brains with improvised tongues and a lucid compositional logic that is quite beautiful.

Shiva's Headband
Take Me To The Mountains... Plus
Akarma AK-359
CD
£14.99
Expanded reissue with bonus tracks of the 1969 debut album by Texas psych/jug/country band Shiva's Headband, in-house heads at Austin's legendary Vulcan Gas Co and contemporaries of The 13th Floor Elevators, Conqueroo at al. Their sound is assembled round the see-sawing git fiddle sound of classically trained violinist Spencer Perskin and they crossed back-to-the-land acidbilly roots with flashes of garage band satori in a way that's similar to early Dead, Koerner, Ray & Glover and The Holy Modal Rounders. Comes with bonus live tracks, their "Lose The Blues" single, liners and cool snaps. "We jammed with Shiva's they had a fantastic band... like walking into a mansion... and Shiva was really who I listened to." - Roky Erickson - Interview - Not Fade Away.
