Fred Anderson and Robert Barry
Duets 2001

Thrill Jockey Thrill-101

Tenor saxophonist Fred Anderson was one of the founders of the legendary AACM, a meta-musical organization birthed in the mid-Sixties to further opportunities for new black music and he’s been an illuminating presence on the Chicago scene for the past four decades, playing with everyone from saxophonist Joseph Jarman and drummer Hamid Drake through members of avant-rockers Tortoise.  It’s fitting, then, that this 2001 duo set was released by Chicago avant-rock label Thrill Jockey; a tip of the hat to a truly legendary and inspirational figure.  He’s joined on drums by Robert Barry, who boasts an equally impressive pedigree, having spent a long time behind the kit with Sun Ra’s Myth-Science Arkestra.  Together they whip up an irreverent storm, combing gruff, testifying R’n’B hymns with some beautifully outside playing.
