Gary Kail
A Soundtrack For Nightmares: Solo Electronic Music 1979-1983
New Underground NU-666
CD-R
£10.99
Very nice deluxe CD-R reissue of an obscure 1984 cassette released by Gary Kail, best known for his part in the consummate weirdo tape noise/guitar thunder album Gary Kail/Zurich 1916, released by Iridescence in 1984. This was a sideways step into solo electronic experiments and heard with 21st century ears it’s massively potent. A Soundtrack For Nightmares has a cold/dark appeal that feels close to Steven Stapleton’s vision for early Nurse With Wound but with less of the sonic surrealism and a more claustrophobic, drone-based atmosphere. The Slava Ranko LP is a good comparison but there’s something a little more composed and deliberately unnerving about the way the recording progresses, moving from deep wells of suspended sound ala early-AMM into distant tectonic scrapings and doomy single note guitar bombs ala Pete Swanson all drenched in haunting fog-horn calls and shortwave flutter ala the Conet Project recordings. A great exhumation of an under-the-radar classic. Nicely packaged too in black jewel case with silver stickered front and insert. Recommended.
