My Cat Is An Alien
When The Windmill's Whirl Dies
Eclipse
LP
£12.99
When The Windmill's Whirl Dies comes in a suitably y moody-looking gatefold sleeve and features one side-long piece with Roberto reading his own poetry (reproduced on the inside sleeve) in a voice that sounds like Spacemen 3’s Sonic Boom performing Robert Ashley’s The Wolfman in the spirit of Hammer House of Horror and two shorter pieces on side two. For the most part the music is ultra-minimal, just padding drums and the slow, distant purr of looped electronics. Recordings come from 2003.

My Cat Is An Alien
Folclore Alieno
Opax 018
CD-R
£8.99
New My Cat Is An Alien album rolls back the usual primitive sci-fi glitz in favour of a more earthy, hand woven style with both brothers on acoustic guitar and Roberto doubling on vocals and cymbal. Also includes a solo Roberto track. The use of pregnant space and the way that they balance full-articulated single notes with a melt of muzzy tones sounds a little like Tetuzi Akyiama’s more liminal form but the addition of a metronomic pulse gives it a nice Reichian repeato dynamic. And this time we ain’t taking orgones. Hand-numbered edition of 150 copies in individually painted wraparound card sleeves.

My Cat Is An Alien
There is a Flame_____Sometimes
Rococo Records RCC-0005
LP
£8.99
The last few MCIAA LPs have seen the Opalio brothers take some giant fuckin leaps, pushing the music well beyond the gravity of the early LPs/CDs and out into an even more personally blasted universe. This beautifully packaged LP comes in a limited hand-numbered edition of 500 copies and documents some of their most minimal and vehement electronic compositions. Indeed, if it wasn’t for the slow pad of drum skins, parts of this could almost pass for a pared-down post-Whitehouse investigation of eviscerated power electronics. A beautiful late-night spin. Recommended.

“Dedicated to the groundnoise of the fuckin’ great analog cassette”, this solo cassette from My Cat Is An Alien’s Roberto Opalio is the first in a projected series and features a side of distressed solo vocal murk that crosses distraught wordless codes with loops of desiccated tongue and a side of solo guitar that sounds like a sky-full of cathedral organs. Praxinoscope
s/t
A Silent Place ASP-08
Pic Disc LP
£12.99
Vinyl/picture disc upgrade for the debut release from a brand new satellite launched from the My Cat Is An Alien mothership. Praxinoscope is the duo of MCIAA's Roberto Opalio on vocals/sounds and Ramona Ponzini (renowned cineaste and Edwige Fenech authority) on "Japanese percussions". Recorded live on July 27th 2005, this is a beautiful recording, with distressed pre-articulate vocals rising in spooks of tone ala Basil Kirchin's autistic tape work or Sun City Girls at their most heavily channelled, while plinks of celestial percussion fall like shards of bloodied glass. Parts of this almost sound like Goblin soundtracking Eraserhead. Originally released on the group's own Opax label in an edition of 125 copies, this run of 500 copies makes this key release a little bit more available.

Painting Petals On Planet Ghost
Oounabara
Opax OPX-024A
Lathe LP + DVD
£49.99
1-sided 12" lathe + DVD-R hand-cut by Peter King in New Zealand and pressed in a hand-numbered edition of only 50 copies, with an original gold-ink drawing by Ramona Ponzini on the flip and a silent short film by Roberto Opalio on the DVD, inspired by the music and art, playable together or separately. "This 15 minutes song is the key-work follow up to their acclaimed debut album on Time-Lag Records. Here Roberto and Maurizio Opalio, aka My Cat Is An Alien, act in the darkness of the outer space, while Ramona Ponzini lights up the autumnal air with her enchanting voice, along with her Japanese percussions and wind chimes; by reitering one only Japanese word (whose meaning is 'Ocean'), she creates a universe of pure magic. Radical minimalism, folk, psychedelia are the main terms that rule this mysterious chant and intimate prayer; but what you'll find here is extremely far from any unuseful relation with what you already know, representing 'Oounabara' a totally still unknown dimension of what the music of today should be: a window on Tomorrow.” – Opax.

Praxinoscope
Epocsonixarp
Opax OPX-023
CD-R
£12.99
\Second album from the duo of My Cat Is An Alien's Roberto Opalio and Ramona Ponzini of Painting Petals On Planet Ghost, special private press edition of only 130 numbered copies, with heavy textured cardboard sleeve, and sticker on cover. "This work is even more lyrical and ecstatic than the debut; here Roberto's use of a mini-keyboard and astral effects collides with Ramona's hypnotic use of several handmade wood percussions and her Japanese wind chimes and bells, creating such an infinite and intimate 'space' so that you cannot but loose yourself inside. A whirlpool of Roberto's whispered wordless vocals will live till the evening dies, and the black of the night will come to surround everything. As the duo asks, 'Play it in the dark'." - Opax.

Black Magic Disco
Black Magic Disco
Important Records Imprec-148
CD
£9.99
"The project was born out of an idea from Tom Greenwood, leader of the avant-folk-blues ensemble Jackie-O Motherfucker, who invited Maurizio and Roberto Opalio, aka the Italian improv duo My Cat Is An Alien (MCIAA), and their close collaborator Ramona Ponzini (also involved with the two brothers in the projects named Painting Petals On Planet Ghost and Praxinoscope, as well as in the new collaboration with Z'ev) to perform with him for two months of touring throughout all Europe in May/ June 2005. As one can imagine, the result was killer. The music which came out of he live performances was totally explosive, combining Ramona's Japanese vocals & hypnotic chimes with Greenwood's psych-blues guitar attitude & wild turntablism over MCIAA's alien cosmic flux of electric guitars, space toys & percussions, creating a still unheard mixture of sounds unifying archaic & post-modern, western & eastern, sky & earth. This debut CD represents a unique chance to experience almost 80 minutes of that pure and magic live action, divided in four long tracks taken from the original live recordings. Black Magic Disco's logo comes from the pencil of Roberto Opalio; the gatefold jacket CD artwork, curated by MCIAA contains some band photos taken during the live performances included in the record." - IR.
