Shiggajon
Live 3: At Stonehenge

No Label No Cat

Cassette
£7.99

Amazing new tape from this unstoppable Danish free jazz orchestra, here recorded live with an expanded line-up in Copenhagen in December 2009. Everyone plays recorders and percussion as well as their primary instrument, be it saxophone, ney flute, electric guitar, electronics, vocals, clarinet, violin, double bass and drums and the results are mind-blowing, moving from Art Ensemble-styled communal freak into heavenly post-Coltrane ascensions through the tone world. Can’t think of anyone outside of the much-missed Rauhan Orkesteri/Paivansade circle with such a devastating grasp of folk-primitive form and higher minded avant bliss. Numbered edition of 70 copies with art paper sleeves and obi strip. Recommended.

Part Wild Horses Mane On Both Sides/Shiggajon

Golem Tapes G-08

CD-R
£7.99

Dream team split release that pairs two of the best free/folk jam bands on the goddamn planet, England’s Part Wild Horses Mane On Both Sides and Denmark’s Shiggajon. Shiggajon contribute two tracks, a slow-burning vertical ascension of reeds over slow bowing strings and a final epic traverse of organ drone and triumphal brass that takes off on John Coltrane’s Cosmic Music. Part Wild Horses are on equally epic form, with the sound of slow feedback tones and prayer bowls sparkling in deep silence before Pascal starts batting around time signatures and Kelly summons the ghost of Takehisa Kosugi. Still no one like them. Highly recommended.

Strenge

Golem Tapes G-05

CD-R
£7.99

Recorded “in an empty place in Copenhagen, March 2010” this is another amazing release from this Danish free music collective. Shiggajon combine cranky olde-world style volk melodies and instrumentation with ecstatic Fire Music chops and a heavy euphoric drone quotient and Strenge is the perfect amalgam of all three, with dark waves of string violence that are pure Ludlow Street ’66 giving way to fife and drum tattoos which unleash dramatic volleys of overtone violence. For fans of Tony Conrad, Angus MacLise, Third Ear Band, Revolutionary Ensemble et al.

Golem Tapes G-14

CD-R
£7.99

Extended remixed/re-mastered edition of what was originally a very limited 3” release featuring an hour of dense, melancholy tape loop experiments from a project with connections to Shiggajon. The atmosphere approximates William Basinski’s masterpiece Disintegration Loops but with a frosty end of the world aspect and the sound of distant alien carousels repeat-spinning in space. Beautifully alien night-time tone poetry with a profoundly lonely aspect.
